The basic theory of how geothermal heating works.

To cool, the system is simply reversed.

Geothermal loops can come in many configurations; the three most common are horizontal, vertical and ocean/pond loops.

After the heat is extracted from the ground and transfered into your home via the geothermal unit it can be spread around your home in several different ways. The most common way of distributing the heat is with a forced air ducted system. It is also possible to use geothermal with radiant floor heating and with high temperature water radiators.
